***********************************************
Installing Yellow Dog 6.1 on you Playstation 3.
***********************************************

NOTE: Yellow Dog defaults at 720p install...

***

What you will need:

USB Keyboard, USB Mouse.

A USB Storage Device. (for backing up your PS3 game saves)

An ISO of the desired Linux distro. We will be going with YDL 6.1

OtherOS.bld file for the respective distro. (this will be included on our install disk)

DVD-Burner and Blank DVD

***

The reason why we want to go with Yellow Dog 6.1 over some other distros is the ease of use. Once installed everything just WORKS (Wireless sixaxis, WIFI, etc) though some other distros work great with the PS3 (I <3 Ubuntu) they require so much extra work to get working what already is working with YDL 6.1

***

To obtain an iso of Yellow Dog 6.1 go here:
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/downloads/

***

If you need software that will allow you to burn Image files just go here for an excellent open sorce (free) burning software:

http://infrarecorder.org/

This is an awesome free burning tool that is really easy to use Smile

Ok so you should back up all your PS3 game save's. To do a full system backup (this will basically copy ALL of the photos, music, videos and game save files and settings on the PS3 to a backup folder; you will need to have an external usb harddrive or thumbdrive w/enough space on it).

In the XMB, go to System
Go to Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility
Then choose Back Up
Finally, pick the device to backup too (memory stick, usb harddrive, etc).

***

No you will need to format your HDD and partition 10gb to go to either the PS3 or the "Other OS". Chose the option to give 10gb to the "other os".

To do all this just go Settings > System Settings > Format Utility

***

After you do this just insert the Linux Yellow Dog 6.1 Disk into the PS3 and go: Settings > System Settings > Install other OS

The PS3 will find a file and ask you if you want to install it. Do it.

***

After this you want to go: Settings > System Settings > Default OS

Change it from "PS3" to "Other OS"

The PS3 will now Restart.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
LINUX TIME!!! Very Happy
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv

Ok! So alot of times people think Linux has crashed while going through this. IT HAS NOT! Sometime's you will sit at a black screen for 5 minuts but its all good just dont shut the system down, hang in there!

You will have to answer basic questions like "keyboard region" and "time zone" etc. Its kinda like a windows install.

Install time will take about an hour.

***

Some things to note:

1. Always log in as "Root" and the password you chose.

2. Use the "Gnome" GUI (chose it in "session" at main splash screen) and stay away from KDE and Enlightenment. Gnome is not the fastest but its faster than those other resorce hogs. Once in you can install a light weight Desk Top enviroment.

3. Go search some forums and check out some Repositories to install. These will give you a whole bunch of new programs to install in the "add and remove programs" search engine.

4. If you want a very very good boost in performance follow the instructions below...

5. Have fun! Very Happy

Yellow Dog 6.1 LINUX Playstation 3 INSTALL FAQ (in steps) Empty Re: Yellow Dog 6.1 LINUX Playstation 3 INSTALL FAQ (in steps)

Post by Event Status Tue Mar 17, 2009 4:34 pm

When you install Yellow Dog 6 you really have to have it in either 720p or 1080i (720p) is the default.

But all you old games are in SDTV and look exactly the same weather running in 720p or 480i...other than the fact that when running in 720p they dont run too well...

Here's your fix:

1.(Log in as root)....(enter password and log into your distro)

2. Open terminal

3. Type: gedit /etc/yabot.conf

4. Your going to now see something like this at the bottom of the .conf file:
---------------------------------------------------
image=/vmlinux-2.6.23-9.ydl6.1
label=linux
read-only
initrd=/initrd-2.6.23-9.ydl6.1.img
append="video=ps3fb:mode:5 rhgb quiet root=LABEL=/1"
----------------------------------------------------
So what you are going to do it copy it and paste it again below with the following changes:
----------------------------------------------------
image=/vmlinux-2.6.23-9.ydl6.1
label=linux_480i
read-only
initrd=/initrd-2.6.23-9.ydl6.1.img
append="video=ps3fb:mode:1 rhgb quiet root=LABEL=/1"
----------------------------------------------------
^What we did was add "_480i" to the end of Linux and changed the number "5" beside mode to "1".

5. Ok now to do it again and make it look like this:

----------------------------------------------------
image=/vmlinux-2.6.23-9.ydl6.1
label=linux_480p
read-only
initrd=/initrd-2.6.23-9.ydl6.1.img
append="video=ps3fb:mode:2 rhgb quiet root=LABEL=/1"
----------------------------------------------------

So all we did here is change the "480i" to "480p" and changed "mode:1" to "mode:2"

6. The whole file should look like this:

# yaboot.conf generated by anaconda

boot=/dev/ps3da
init-message=Welcome to YDL!\nHit for boot options

partition=1
timeout=80
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot
delay=5
enablecdboot
enableofboot
enablenetboot
nonvram
mntpoint=/boot/yaboot
usemount

image=/vmlinux-2.6.23-9.ydl6.1
label=linux
read-only
initrd=/initrd-2.6.23-9.ydl6.1.img
append="video=ps3fb:mode:5 rhgb quiet root=LABEL=/1"

image=/vmlinux-2.6.23-9.ydl6.1
label=linux_480i
read-only
initrd=/initrd-2.6.23-9.ydl6.1.img
append="video=ps3fb:mode:1 rhgb quiet root=LABEL=/1"

image=/vmlinux-2.6.23-9.ydl6.1
label=linux_480p
read-only
initrd=/initrd-2.6.23-9.ydl6.1.img
append="video=ps3fb:mode:2 rhgb quiet root=LABEL=/1"

7. Save and close file.

8. Now restart the system. When you get to "kboot" just press "tab" on the keyboard and you can now choose between "linux" (720p), "linux_480i", and "linux "480p". All your games will be running full speed when you play in 480p.

*******************************
PS3Bodega Software Repository
*******************************

Open a terminal window and enter these commands:

Code: Select all
su -l

Code: Select all
gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/dribble.repo
Change enabled=1 to enabled=0 ,save your change, and close gedit.

Code: Select all
gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/livna-stable.repo
Change enabled=1 to enabled=0 ,save your change, and close gedit.

2. Setup the fedora-extras repo if you haven't already:

On the terminal window, enter this command:

Code: Select all
gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-extras.repo

Copy/paste the following text into gedit:

[fedora-extras]
name=Fedora Extras
baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/extras/6/ppc
gpgcheck=0
enabled=1
protect=0

3. Create a ps3bodega.repo file in your /etc/yum.repos.d folder:

Back on the terminal window, enter this command:

Code: Select all
gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/ps3bodega.repo

Copy/paste the following text into gedit:

NOTE: Due to differences between YDL 6.0 and YDL 6.1, I've created a new repo specifically for YDL 6.1. The 6.0 version of the PS3Bodega repo will no longer be updated.

If you're running Yellow Dog 6.0:

[PS3Bodega]
name=PS3Bodega.com YellowDog Compatible Packages
baseurl=http://pleasantfiction.ipower.com/ps3linux/ps3bodega/
gpgcheck=0
enabled=1
protect=1

If you're running Yellow Dog 6.1:

[PS3Bodega]
name=PS3Bodega.com YellowDog Compatible Packages
baseurl=http://pleasantfiction.ipower.com/ps3linux/ps3bodega61/ppc/
gpgcheck=0
enabled=1
protect=1

Save the file and close gedit.

4. Back on the terminal window, enter this command:

Code: Select all
yum clean all
What this does: "Eliminate any cached packages from the system and eliminate all of the files which yum uses to determine the remote availability of packages. Using this option will force yum to download all the headers the next time it is run."

5. You're done setting up the new repo. This step is optional but recommended:

Please confirm you have yum-protectbase installed and configured properly. Enter this command:

Code: Select all
rpm -q yum-protectbase
Expected result:
yum-protectbase-1.0.3-1.fc6

Also confirm you have protect=1 in yellowdog-base.repo and yellowdog-updates.repo as mentioned in the How To Install Software Guide. You can use gedit to do this with these commands:

Code: Select all
su -l

Code: Select all
gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/yellowdog-base.repo /etc/yum.repos.d/yellowdog-updates.repo

If you see protect=1 listed anywhere in each of those files, that's good. If not, just add a line with protect=1 to each of the files (you should already have this if you've followed the How to Install Software Guide).

Finally, confirm the repos are listed with this command:

Code: Select all
yum repolist

Expected result:

Code: Select all
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Loading "protectbase" plugin
repo id repo name status
PS3Bodega PS3Bodega.com YellowDog Compatible Packa enabled
base Yellow Dog Linux 6 Base enabled
extras Yellow Dog Linux 6 Extras enabled
fedora-extras Fedora Extras enabled
updates Yellow Dog Linux 6 Updates enabled

^^^

This will get you all kinds of goodies in the "add and Remove Programs"

Yellow Dog 6.1 LINUX Playstation 3 INSTALL FAQ (in steps) Empty Re: Yellow Dog 6.1 LINUX Playstation 3 INSTALL FAQ (in steps)

Post by Event Status Tue Mar 17, 2009 4:41 pm

***PRO TIP***

If your running in a low resolution and you open a window and can't see the whole thing just hold "left Alt" on the keyboard and click and hold the "left mouse button"...this allows you to drag windows off the screen AND grab the window anywhere

THIS IS WHAT TO DO IF CONTROLLERS ARE NOT WORKING:

1. First, open a terminal window and install bluez-libs:

Code: Select all
su

Code: Select all
yum install bluez-libs
NOTE: If it says "Nothing to do" here then bluez-libs is already installed.

2. Then install the bluez-utils package from here:
http://pleasantfiction.ipower.com/ps3li ... .2.ppc.rpm
(select Open in Software Installer)

In a terminal window, enter the following commands (expected result show below each one):

3. Become the root user:

Code: Select all
su -l
(that's a lowercase l, not a number 1)

4. Stop bluetooth service:

Code: Select all
service bluetooth stop
Stopping Bluetooth services: [ OK ]

5. Stop hidd service:

Code: Select all
service hidd stop
Shutting down hidd: [ OK ]

6. Start hidd service:

Code: Select all
service hidd start
Starting hidd: [ OK ]

7. Start bluetooth service:

Code: Select all
service bluetooth start
Starting Bluetooth services: [ OK ]

8. Stop hidd service:

Code: Select all
service hidd stop
Shutting down hidd: [ OK ]

9. Start hidd service again with these options:

Code: Select all
hidd --server --nocheck -n

10. Now press the PS button on your Sixaxis / Dualshock 3 -- you can pair up to two controllers. Expected result should look similar to this:

hidd[8284]: Bluetooth HID daemon
hidd[8284]: New HID device 00:16:FE:C9:79:A8 (Sony Computer Entertainment Wireless Controller)

Hit Ctrl-C to exit.

you only have to do it once. From now on after you reboot you should be able to use your controller(s) over bluetooth by just turning them on with the PS button.

You should now have a new device listed in /dev/input for the new joystick. It will be js0 if you didn't have any joysticks before, or js1, js2, and so on if you had other joysticks connected.
